Letter, 1904 March 31, Tuxedo, New York [to] Mr. Piere [sic] MacDonald / Edwin Markham. 1904.

Markham asks Mr. MacDonald to supply him with a copy of the best photograph of myself." Pirie MacDonald was a noted photographer of the period. The letter is written on the letterhead of "The Arena : a twentieth century review of Opinion."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
